Beyond the Resort: Hidden Gems in the Caribbean

The famous Caribbean islands are famous for good reason—but the region's real magic often lies just beyond the cruise ports and mega-resorts. If you're willing to take a small ferry, drive a winding road, or simply ask a local where they go, you'll find islands and corners that feel like the Caribbean of decades past. Here are some of our favorite hidden gems.

Les Saintes, Guadeloupe

This tiny archipelago off the coast of Guadeloupe is one of the most beautiful and least crowded spots in the entire Caribbean. Terre-de-Haut, the main island, has a charming village of red-roofed houses, superb Creole-French food, and the stunning Plage de Pompierre. Rent a scooter, climb up to Fort Napoléon for the view, and enjoy a place that still feels like a secret.

Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe

Nicknamed "the big pancake" for its flat, round shape, Marie-Galante is all sugarcane fields, old windmills, and empty golden beaches. It's the home of some of the finest rhum agricole in the world, and its slow pace is a welcome antidote to busier islands. Plage de la Feuillère is among the most beautiful beaches you'll ever have nearly to yourself.

Dominica: The Nature Island

Often confused with the Dominican Republic, Dominica is a completely different, wilder place. There are no sprawling resorts here—instead you'll find boiling lakes, hot springs, hundreds of rivers, and some of the best diving in the region. Hike a section of the Waitukubuli National Trail, soak in the Ti Kwen Glo Cho hot springs, and swim in the Emerald Pool.

Vieques and Culebra, Puerto Rico

A short ferry from Puerto Rico's mainland, these two islands offer some of the Caribbean's best beaches without the crowds. Culebra's Flamenco Beach regularly ranks among the world's finest, while Vieques is famous for its bioluminescent Mosquito Bay, which glows electric blue at night. Wild horses roam freely, and development remains refreshingly low-key.

Saba, Dutch Caribbean

This five-square-mile volcanic dot has no beaches to speak of, which is exactly why it stays uncrowded. What it does have is world-class diving, the dramatic hike up Mount Scenery (the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands), and a storybook village called Windwardside. Saba is for travelers who prefer hiking boots and dive tanks to sun loungers.

How to Find Your Own Hidden Gems

The best-kept secrets rarely appear in glossy brochures. Talk to taxi drivers, guesthouse owners, and fishermen. Take the ferry to the smaller island next door. Drive the coastal road to its end. Visit in shoulder season. The Caribbean rewards curiosity—step just slightly off the beaten path and you'll discover the version of these islands that most visitors never see.
