Sugar cane, sacred sanctuaries, a boat ride on the river, and even a voodoo show. This exclusive excursion brings together a bit of everything that makes the Dominican Republic so fascinating. Expect to meet many locals and explore the interior of the country around the river. You go off the beaten path to discover Dominican culture and society by visiting a fruit farm, a fishing village, and a market. Luis, one of our expert guides, explains: "Higuey is home to most of the local resort employees, and it's an enriching experience to see daily life in full swing. At the market, you can buy all kinds of things, from a bottle of rum to a live chicken". A visit to a plantation will immediately give you a real insight into the country. You will be able to taste tropical fruits like papaya and pineapple, as well as coffee and cocoa. The next stop is Higuey, the provincial capital, where you can look for spices in the market and see the locals stocking up on fresh produce. You will also pass by the modern dark-colored basilica, an important place of worship. We will then head south through its tropical countryside to the small fishing village of Boca de Yuma. After a casual lunch of Caribbean dishes prepared with local ingredients, you will set off on a boat ride on the Yuma River. You will then discover the complex history of Dominican sugar cane plantations in a "batey". These plantation camps are home to communities of Haitians harvesting sugar cane. Take the opportunity to meet and chat with community members before watching a voodoo show.
