Experience the adventure of bioluminescent kayaking and discover the sparkling waters of Laguna Grande on dark nights. Tour offered as a full moon kayak adventure, ecology-focused during the lunar cycle. Don't let your day end at sunset. Enjoy a relaxing sunset kayak tour that will take you to the fascinating Laguna Grande, in the town of Fajardo, located in the northeast corner of the island. Under the cover of the night sky and the historic lighthouse, you will be able to touch the waters that glow with bioluminescent organisms. The activity begins at sunset in the small fishing village of Las Croabas where you will meet the friendly guides. You check in and equip yourself with all necessary equipment, including plant-based insect repellent. Follow Kayak 101 training on safety, then board your kayak. Cross a small fishing port and paddle to the entrance of the Las Cabezas de San Juan reserve. Here, you enter a mystical canal that leads to a peaceful place where mangroves create natural tunnels and images and sounds of wildlife surround you. After 25 to 30 minutes of paddling through the canal, depending on traffic and tidal currents, your guide stops once in the lagoon to give you commentary on the following points of interest: - The mangrove forest and different species - The birds that inhabit the region - The aquatic marine life that uses the lagoon as an estuary - Information about the bioluminescence organism - History of the lighthouse - Overview of seven of the eight ecosystems present in the region Then, enter the lagoon called Laguna Grande (large lagoon), where you paddle along the edge of the mangrove forest and watch the paddle stroke light up with bioluminescent blue-green/white-green light. Meet fish that look like shooting stars as they swim through the thick concentration of Pyrodinium Bahamense, a species of Dinoflagellates. At the stop point, admire the magnificent views of the rainforest and Fajardo's lighthouse, while discussing. Then, begin the route to Bird Island to observe the many birds perched there at night. After quietly rounding the small island, begin the return to the starting site. This tour is offered during the full moon cycle, so it is recommended to check the moon phase.
