Santo Domingo is not only the capital of the Dominican Republic, it is also the largest city in the Caribbean. This full-day tour offers you the chance to discover a city where modern skyscrapers dominate a UNESCO-listed colonial zone. Your day includes guided tours of the Gothic cathedral and the Alcazar de Colon, as well as lunch and free time. Luis, one of our expert local guides, says: 'Calle Colon is one of the liveliest streets in the city, ideal for grabbing a coffee while watching the world go by. I love Padre Billini Street, with its mix of time-worn colonial churches, whitewashed houses and shaded parks. You wouldn't know it's located in the center.' After a three-hour drive, you'll arrive in the historic center of Santo Domingo. You'll plunge into the era of Christopher Columbus as you pass the national pantheon, the Ozama fortress and the Museum of the Royal Houses, with your guide explaining their history. You'll visit the Alcazar de Colon, which belonged to Christopher Columbus's family, and the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor, dating from the early 1500s. It claims the title of oldest church in the Americas. You'll enjoy a typical lunch at the family restaurant La Atarazana, then you'll be driven through modern Santo Domingo, passing the Plaza de la Culture, the Museum of the Dominican Man, the National Palace and the El Faro a Colon monument. It's a full day that takes you through 500 years of history and architecture.
