Higuey day visit with a local meal at a family home. This visit, which gives you a glimpse of Dominican life beyond the Coconut Coast, has it all. A sugarcane plantation, a cigar-rolling demonstration, and a great beach are just some of the highlights. But the star of the day is undoubtedly the lunch with a local family. As Ramon, one of our local guides, says, 'I am always proud to show my heritage through our gastronomy.' Like the island itself, Dominican cuisine has been influenced by Taino, Spanish, and African flavors. There is even a hint of the Middle East in some dishes. You will see, smell, and taste a whole new side of our country. We will start early and head to Higuey to see the famous Altagracia Basilica, a place of pilgrimage due to the miraculous appearance of the Virgin. Then, get your camera ready, as we will take a scenic route through rustic villages towards our next stop: a coconut oil producer. A visit to a sugarcane plantation followed by a rum tasting awaits you next, before witnessing a cigar-rolling demonstration by a master in the field. After this busy morning, you will be ready for your lunch. You will be welcomed by a Dominican family in their home to enjoy a meal of typical dishes prepared with local products. You will also be able to see the family's farm and coffee plantation, and taste freshly grown cocoa and fruit. We will end this day of exploration with some time on Macao Beach, where you can relax in a natural environment and perhaps take a swim.
