It is an open-air zoo with habitats designed to reflect natural environments and allows visitors to observe animals up close. The only subtropical zoo in the continental United States, it hosts animals from Asia, Australia, Africa, and the Americas. The zoo spans nearly 750 acres, includes about 4 miles of walkways, and is home to over 2,000 animals representing more than 375 species. Over 130 of these species are classified as endangered or critically endangered. The zoo also contains over 750 species of plants and more than 100 educational exhibits. Zoo Miami participates annually in about thirty wildlife and environmental conservation programs across five continents. It is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
